December newsletter: Construction begins on our new Beer Garden in Savannah

on Sat., Dec. 01, 2012 Posted in News

Construction begins on new Beer Garden
On Monday, Nov. 26, construction began on Moon River Brewing's new Beer Garden, located next door to our current location at 21. W. Bay St. in the heart of historic downtown Savannah, Ga.

With good weather and a little luck, the Beer Garden will serve its first Moon River Brewing beer on March 1, 2013.

The 5,400-square-foot Beer Garden will feature a single-story building that will be attached to the current Moon River Brewing building. The new building will house restroom facilities, a bar and a small kitchen.

The remaining area, about 3,600 square feet, will seat more than 200 patrons. Carolina jasmine (with Moon River Brewing yellow blossoms) will be grown on a trellis over most of the seating area, providing cooling shade on hot summer days. Herbs, flowers, shrubs and trees will be planted along the north and west sides of the Beer Garden to enhance the garden feeling.

"The zoning board passed our request for a height variance to allow for a 13-foot tall trellis on Nov. 27," says Gene Beeco, co-owner and general manager. "The exterior wall of the west side of the building, basement level, has been waterproofed. We have received the permit to build a wall around the Beer Garden space."

Let the rejoicing begin
because Tater Ale is back
Some brewers like to make fall harvest beers from pumpkins. Moon River Brewing's brewmaster John Pinkerton, however, uses jumbo sweet potatoes.

We also leave the spices out of the beer and serve each pint with a blend of ground roasted pumpkin seeds and pie spices on the rim of the glass.

This low ABV beer is a not-so-mild English-style mild ale, capitalizing on a snappy malt flavor and a floral English hop character.

As part of the production process, brewer Henry Sims baked hundreds of pounds of sweet potatoes in the pizza ovens at Vinnie Van Go Go's in City Market.

New beer named after vampire-like creatures
The Gullah people of coastal South Carolina and Georgia tell tales of Boo Hags haunting the Lowcountry in search of suitable hosts to ride. Feeding off the exhalations of their prey, they induces a state of dream-filled paralysis and leave their victims alive, but drained of vitality.

But don't let all that spooky talk worry you. The shadowy pallor and hop intensity of Moon River Brewing's new Boo Hag Black Ale may take your breath away, but we are willing to bet you'll be up for another pint.

Join us for storytelling at a candlelight dinner
Come join us in our haunted brew pub Oct. 24, 6 pm., for an intimate evening of storytelling and dinner by candlelight. We will be serving two delicious appetizers (sauteed glazed pork cheeks with collard greens or pumpkin ravioli)  and entrees (steak au poivre or andouille-stuffed chicken)  in our beer cellar, followed by a tour of our second floor with desserts waiting for your arrival. $40 per person. Moon River Brewing sponsors community events
Co-owners Gene Beeco and John Pinkerton believe that local businesses should take a supportive role in the Savannah community. This month, we are pleased to be sponsors of the following events:

Rivers Rock! "Ogeechee River Revival," Oct. 4
Highlights of this fundraiser, held at Moon River Brewing, include music by Swamp Cabbage, a silent auction and a raffle. Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. Purchase online at riversrock.org.

This organization works to protect, preserve and improve the water quality of the Ogeechee River basin.

Note: Due to this event, Moon River Brewing will close to the public at 5 p.m.

Ossabaw Island Pig Roast, Picnic and Art Sale, Oct. 20

This is the only fundraising event hosted by the Ossabaw Island Foundation. Tickets include boat transportation from Skidaway Island to Ossabaw Island. Learn more and order tickets.

Ossabaw Island is a national treasure preserved by Eleanor Torrey-West and her family for the benefit of present and future generations. The island is a 26,000-acre, undeveloped barrier island located in Chatham County.

The island was designated as Georgia’s first Heritage Preserve with the written understanding that it would “only be used for natural, scientific and cultural study, research and education, and environmentally sound preservation, conservation and management of the island’s ecosystem.”

Brewmaster John Pinkerton receives Pioneer Award

on Mon., Sep. 03, 2012 Posted in News

On Sept. 1, Moon River Brewing Co. brewmaster John Pinkerton was awarded the 2012 Pioneer Award at the Savannah Craft Brew Festival in Savannah, Georgia.

According to the announcement in the festival brochure:

For more than 18 years, he has worked in every aspect of operations in both brewpubs and regional-scale production breweries.

Pinkerton graduated from Radford University in 1991, completed the diploma course at the Siebel Institute in 1996 and attended the Alltech Alcohol School in 2002. He has established a career charcterized by leadership and service to the craft-brewing industry.

His record as an advocate for men and women working in the brewing trade can be traced back to 1996 when he was a founding Steering Committee member of the Rubber Boots Society (a guild for brewers in the mid-Atlantic).

As a longtime member of the Brewers Association (BA), he has contributed countless hours of service to the organization.

After being elected to the BA's Board of Directors in 2009, Pinkerton was appointed as the Chair of the Brew-pub Committee. He also sits on the BA's Technical and Government Affairs committees, and is serving his second term on their Board.

At the start of 2010, Pinkerton helped establish the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild and currently serves as president. In just two years time, the Guild has managed to establish itself as a notable presence in Georgia's political landscape.

In 2012, it scored its first legislative victory by successfully piloting HB 472 through the Georgia General Assembly. He is frequently called upon to serve as a judge for regional and national competitions. He also volunteers his expertise for conferences, festivals and competitions.

New Turtle Moon Rye-zn collaboration beer now on tap
Brewmasters from Moon River Brewing and Terrapin Beer Co. have collaborated to create Turtle Moon Rye-zn (3.9 ABV)The beer went on tap at Moon River Brewing on Aug. 31.

Turtle Moon Rye-zn is a classic style of Bavarian Hefeweizen with a few interpretive twists. According to Moon River Brewing's brewmaster John Pinkerton, "In addition to the wheat malt and traditional Bavarian yeast culture, we added Munich malt for a light toastiness and several types of malted rye for complexity. On top of that, we layered in yet another dimension with some local Savannah honey, supplied by our friends at Savannah Bee Company.

"The initial impression is very traditional with its yeast-derived flavors, aromas of bananas and clove spice. The pallet is then challenged to tune-in amid a torrent of beguiling malt flavors, tangy-sweet apple and a hint of grassy honey," he continues. "The finish is pleasantly grainy with a slight bitterness that lingers for a moment while the fruit and spice fades away."

New Turtle Moon Rye-zn collaboration beer goes on tap

on Fri., Aug. 31, 2012 Posted in News

Brewmasters from Moon River Brewing Co. and Terrapin Beer Co. have collaborated to create Turtle Moon Rye-zn (3.9 ABV). The beer went on tap at Moon River Brewing Aug. 31, 2012. This brew represents the two companies' participation in the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild Collaboration Series.

Classic style of Bavarian hefeweizen with a few interpretive twists
According to brewmaster John Pinkerton, "In addition to the wheat malt and traditional Bavarian yeast culture, we added Munich malt for a light toastiness and several types of malted rye for complexity. On top of that, we layered in yet another dimension with some local Savannah honey, supplied by our friends at Savannah Bee Company.

"The finish is pleasantly grainy with a slight bitterness that lingers for a moment while the fruit and spice fades away."

Fermentables: Light Munich Malt (U.K.), Malted Wheat (German), Malted Rye (Canada), Rye Crystal Malt (U.K.) and raw honey (Savannah, Georgia)

Hops: Saaz (Czech Republic)

Georgia Craft Brewers Guild: A not-for-profit trade organization serving Georgia's small and independent breweries, prewpubs and contract breweries. Pinkerton is the current president of the guild.

Collaboration: The Guild has paired most of the brewery members with brewpub members and each pair works together to plan, design and brew a unique beer. Brewmaster Brian "Spike" Bukowski of Terrapin Beer Co. in Athens, Georgia, teamed up with John Pinkerton of Moon River Brewing.
